Raleigh’s Stormwater division has an “Adopt a Stream” program where groups adopt a stream and agree to clean up any trash in it twice a year and report any pollution. The city supplies bags, gloves, safety vests, and grabbers. The Crosswinds HOA has adopted the stream that runs through Crosswinds, starting at Strickland Road, crossing under Windjammer Drive and Bridgeport Drive, and ending up where Harbor Drive meets Sawmill Road. You can see our sign at the creek crossing on Bridgeport Drive between Lead Mine Road and Windjammer Drive.
We walk the creek in the fall and the spring picking up any trash we find. Most of the trash is near the road crossings, but some of it washes downstream. Volunteers of all ages are welcome. We generally put in a couple of hours, but with more people it goes even faster. It’s a fun outdoors walk in the woods that is perfect for social distancing.
Our next walk will be on Saturday, April 17, or in the case of inclement weather that day, the clean-up will be postponed to the following Saturday, April 24. We will meet at the Adopt-a-Stream sign. So that we have a headcount for cleaning supplies, please RSVP with the number of people in your party by calling, texting, or emailing Keith Karlsson at 919-539-7616 or keithkarlsson@yahoo.com. This will also allow us to notify you in case of postponement.
